Paid the Tax but Got a Demand? Fixing Challan Mistakes
A wrong year or minor head on a challan can keep a demand open after you paid. What the portal's Challan Correction service fixes and its 7 and 30 day limits.

You paid the tax, the money left your account, and the portal still shows a demand. When the payment itself went through correctly but your return did not claim it, the fix is a rectification, covered in received a tax demand after paying. This post covers the other cause: the challan was filled in wrong, so the payment sits against the wrong year or the wrong type of payment.
The e-Filing portal has a Challan Correction service that fixes three fields online: the year (Assessment Year or Tax Year), the major head and the minor head. The windows are short. A year can be changed only within 7 days of the deposit date, and a major or minor head within 30 days. After that, corrections go through your Assessing Officer.
Find out what went wrong first
Open the challan before doing anything else. The paid challan is under e-Pay Tax > Payment History on incometax.gov.in, and the payment also appears in Form 26AS and AIS under taxes paid. Check four things on it:
- PAN. Is it yours?
- Year. For income of FY 2025-26, self-assessment tax is paid for AY 2026-27. Income from 1 April 2026 falls under the Income-tax Act, 2025, and challans for those years ask for a Tax Year (Tax Year 2026-27). Choosing Tax Year 2026-27 when you meant AY 2026-27 puts the payment a year ahead. AY 2026-27 or Tax Year 2026-27 has a table of which year to pick.
- Major head. 0021 is income tax for anyone other than a company; 0020 is corporation tax.
- Minor head. 100 is advance tax, 300 is self-assessment tax and 400 is tax on regular assessment, used to pay a demand.
Which mistake causes which problem
| Mistake on the challan | What you see | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong year (for example Tax Year 2026-27 instead of AY 2026-27) | CPC does not credit the payment, so the 143(1) intimation shows a demand | Online correction within 7 days of deposit; after that, your Assessing Officer |
| Demand paid as self-assessment tax (300) instead of demand payment (400) | The payment is recorded but the demand stays open on the portal | Online correction within 30 days; or a rectification with the challan |
| Advance tax (100) and self-assessment tax (300) swapped | The payment is recorded as the wrong type of tax | Online correction within 30 days; after that, your Assessing Officer |
| Major head 0020 instead of 0021 | The payment is recorded as corporation tax | Online correction within 30 days; after that, your Assessing Officer |
| Wrong PAN | The payment shows against someone else's PAN | Not one of the online fields; write to your Assessing Officer |
| TDS challan (ITNS 281, paid by a deductor with a TAN) | The deductor's records are wrong | The deductor corrects it on TRACES, not the e-Filing portal |
Correcting a challan on the portal
Conditions, from the department's user manual:
- You must be a registered user and log in. If your PAN is inoperative because it is not linked with Aadhaar, the portal shows a pop-up with a Link Now option.
- The challan must be for AY 2020-21 or later.
- It must be unconsumed: not already used up in processing a return or adjusted against a demand.
- No other correction request for that challan can be pending.
- Only one online correction is allowed per challan.
- Only minor heads 100, 300 and 400 can be changed online.
Steps:
- Log in and go to Services > Challan Correction.
- Click + Create Challan Correction Request.
- Choose what to correct: change in Tax Year/AY, minor head or major head. Click Continue.
- Select the year or enter the CIN (Challan Identification Number) to see the unconsumed challans, and pick the one to correct.
- Enter the corrected values on the Correction in Challan page and click Continue.
- Check the summary of changes and click Continue.
- e-Verify the request with Aadhaar OTP, EVC, DSC or another option shown.
- Use View Challan Correction Status to follow it. The manual says updates can take 7 to 20 days.
Two worked examples
Caught in time. Meera pays ₹22,400 of self-assessment tax on 18 July 2026 for income of FY 2025-26 and, on the new challan, selects Tax Year 2026-27. Checking the receipt on 22 July, four days later, she sees the error. She files a correction on the portal, changing the year to AY 2026-27, e-verifies it, and waits for the challan to show under AY 2026-27 in Form 26AS before claiming it in Schedule IT of her return.
Caught late. Arjun makes the same mistake but notices only in September, when his 143(1) intimation shows a demand of ₹22,400 plus interest. The 7-day window has passed, so the online service cannot change the year. He writes to his Assessing Officer (the portal's Know Your AO service shows who that is) asking for the challan to be moved to AY 2026-27, with the challan receipt, its CIN and Form 26AS attached. Once the challan shows under the right year, he files a rectification request, Tax Credit Mismatch Correction, with the challan details. Meanwhile he records his position under Pending Actions > Response to Outstanding Demand by choosing Disagree with demand (Either in Full or Part) and giving the challan details.
When the demand was paid with the wrong minor head
This is the commonest way to pay a demand and still see it outstanding. Paying through the general e-Pay Tax screen as self-assessment tax (300) puts the money against your PAN for the year, but the demand is not marked as paid. Paying through the Pay Now button on the demand itself avoids this.
If it has already happened:
- Within 30 days of payment, change the minor head to 400 through Challan Correction.
- If the window has passed, file a rectification with request type Tax Credit Mismatch Correction and add the paid challan. The department's rectification FAQ gives this as the route when a demand has already been paid.
- Record the payment in your response to the demand so it is not adjusted against a refund in the meantime; responding to an outstanding demand shows the screen.
Don't pay twice
A second payment to clear the screen does not cancel the first one. The extra amount comes back only as a refund after the return or rectification is processed. Fix the challan, then the record. If both the challan and your return have errors, see rectification or revised return for which route fits.
myutils.me shows each PAN's tax deposits, pending challans and outstanding demands side by side after you add the PAN or press Sync, which makes a challan booked under the wrong year easier to spot. The correction itself is filed on the portal.
FAQ
Can I change the amount on a challan?
No. The online service changes only the year, the major head and the minor head. The amount is what the bank received.
My challan is from AY 2019-20. Can I correct it online?
No. The online service covers challans from AY 2020-21 onwards. Older challans are corrected by the Assessing Officer.
I already used my one online correction and it is still wrong. What now?
Further changes go to your Assessing Officer. Write with the challan receipt, CIN and the correction you need.
How long does an online correction take to show?
The user manual gives 7 to 20 days. Check the challan in Form 26AS or under View Challan Correction Status before filing a rectification that relies on it.
