Why Your Part Number Changed After SIR and How to Find It

SIR capped polling stations at 1,200 electors and re-serialised the rolls. Why your part and serial number moved, and how to find the new ones by EPIC.

A polling booth map with a pin moved to a new block, with the words “Part number: Changed after SIR”

If your old voter slip says Part 112, serial 845, and you can't find yourself there in the new draft roll, you have probably not been deleted. During the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), polling stations are rationalised so that none has more than 1,200 electors, and the roll is then re-numbered. Both steps can give you a new part number, a new serial number, or both. Your EPIC number (the number on your voter ID card) stays the same, and it is the fastest way to find your new entry.

Rationalisation of polling stations is a scheduled step of SIR, done before the draft roll is published. The CEO Delhi's SIR press note of 15 May 2026, for example, schedules it after the house-to-house visits and before the draft roll. So a new part number is an expected side effect of the revision, not a sign that something went wrong with your entry.

Part, serial number and polling station: what each one is

The electoral roll of an Assembly Constituency (AC) is printed in parts. Each part covers one polling area and is attached to one polling station (the booth where those electors vote). Inside a part, each elector has a serial number.

FieldWhat it identifiesCan it change after SIR?
EPIC numberYou, as an electorNo
AC numberYour Assembly ConstituencyOnly if you shifted
Part numberYour polling area and its polling stationYes
Serial numberYour position in that part's listYes
SectionThe street, ward or locality within the partYes, if areas were moved

So the part and serial number describe where you sit in the list. They are not part of your identity as a voter.

Why your part number changed

Polling stations were capped at 1,200 electors

The Election Commission of India (ECI) lowered the maximum number of electors per polling station from 1,500 to 1,200. The CEO Delhi's SIR press note of 15 May 2026 says so directly: "ECI has reduced the limit of 1500 voter per polling station to 1200 voters per polling station for ease of electors during the poll". It lists Rationalization of Polling Stations as a step of the SIR schedule, ahead of the draft roll.

When a booth has more than 1,200 electors, it is split, and a new polling station and part are created. Where booths are very small, two may be merged. Goa's figures show the scale. Its CEO's press note of 13 December 2025 reported 1,725 booths before rationalisation, 8 new booths created and 2 deleted, giving 1,731 after.

Parts were renumbered

Once new parts are added or old ones merged, the parts of the constituency may be numbered again in order. Your booth may be at the same school as before and still carry a different part number, because a new part was inserted before it.

Your locality moved to another part

When a large part is split, some of its sections (streets, blocks or villages) go to the new part. If your section was one of them, you are now listed under the new part's polling station, which may be in a different building.

The roll was re-serialised

Within each part, SIR removes names marked as absent, shifted, dead or duplicate and adds new electors. The serial numbers are then reassigned. Even if your part number did not change, your serial number may have, because people listed before you were added or removed.

A worked example

Say Part 112 of your constituency had 1,480 electors before SIR, across four sections.

Before SIRAfter rationalisation
Part 112: sections 1 to 4, 1,480 electorsPart 112: sections 1 and 2, about 760 electors
New part: sections 3 and 4, about 720 electors
You: section 3, serial 845You: in the new part, serial number reassigned

If the new part is numbered 113, every later part in the constituency moves up by one. Someone in old Part 113 who was never moved now finds their name under Part 114. These numbers are only an illustration. Your own CEO publishes the actual list of parts and polling stations.

How to find your new part and serial number

  1. Keep your EPIC number ready. It is printed on your voter ID card and on any e-EPIC you downloaded.
  2. Search by EPIC on the ECI's voter portal, voters.eci.gov.in, or in the ECINET app. You can also use our free electoral roll search, which looks up your entry on the ECI's public website. It is independent and not affiliated with the ECI.
  3. Note the AC number, part number, serial number and polling station name the search returns.
  4. Open the published roll PDF for that part. The first page names the polling station and the sections the part covers. Find your serial number in the list and check your name, your relative's name, age and photo.
  5. If the search returns nothing, try your name and relative's name in the details search on the ECI portal. Then check the draft roll and the list of names not included that your CEO published for your part.

When to act, and how

Listed under an address you have leftFile Form 8 for shifting of residence.
Not found by EPIC or by detailsContact your Booth Level Officer (BLO) before the claims period closes. If your name is not on the draft roll, file Form 6 as the BLO advises.
Family members of one household split across two partsAsk the BLO whether the sections can be corrected. It may simply follow the section boundary.
New polling station is far away or hard to reachRaise it with the BLO or the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO). Polling stations are set by the election machinery, not by request.

Forms 6 and 8 can be filed on voters.eci.gov.in or in ECINET, which also has a Book-a-Call with BLO option. The ECI's voter helpline number is 1950. Our guide to names missing from the draft roll explains which form fits which problem.

Before polling day

  • Search again closer to the election. Part and serial numbers are fixed in the final roll, but you should vote at the polling station printed for your current part.
  • Carry your EPIC or another photo identity document the ECI accepts.
  • Polling staff look you up by part and serial number, so having them ready shortens the queue.

FAQ

Does a new part number mean my name was deleted and re-added?

No. A changed part or serial number usually comes from rationalisation of polling stations and re-serialisation of the roll. Your EPIC number and enrolment stay the same.

Will my EPIC number change?

No. The EPIC number identifies you as an elector and does not change when your part or serial number does. Search by EPIC to find the new entry.

Do I need to file a form because my part number changed?

Not if your details are correct. File Form 8 only if something is wrong, such as your address, name or photo.

Why is my polling station now in a different building?

Your section may have moved into a new part created when a booth with more than 1,200 electors was split. The new part has its own polling station.

Can I see the old and new part numbers side by side?

Some CEOs publish part-wise lists of polling stations after rationalisation. Check your state CEO's website. The reliable check is an EPIC search, which always returns your current part.
