ITR-V as Income Proof: How a Bank, Landlord or Employer Can Check It

An ITR-V shows what someone declared and that they filed. Learn what it proves, the five checks a lender, landlord or employer can run, and the red flags to look for.

A landlord and bank officer examining a document with a magnifier, with the words “ITR-V: As income proof”

An applicant hands you two or three ITR-Vs as proof of income for a loan, a flat or a job. Each is a one-page PDF with a total income, the tax paid and an acknowledgement number. What it proves is narrower than it looks: the person filed a return with these figures. It doesn't show that the Income Tax Department accepted them, or that the PDF in front of you is the one the portal issued.

Here is what an ITR-V does and doesn't establish, and five checks that close most of the gap.

What an ITR-V is

ITR-V stands for "Income Tax Return Verification" form. When a return is filed online, the e-filing portal generates this one-page acknowledgement with the acknowledgement number, the PAN, name, assessment year, ITR form, filing date and a summary of the return: total income, tax payable, taxes paid and the refund or balance due.

It has two uses. A taxpayer who can't e-verify signs it and posts it to CPC (the Centralized Processing Centre) in Bengaluru. Everyone else e-verifies with Aadhaar OTP, net banking, a bank or demat EVC or a DSC, and then downloads the acknowledgement as proof of filing. Banks and landlords call both of these "ITR-V".

A return has to be verified within 30 days of filing (Notification No. 2/2024, in force from 1 April 2024). A return that is never verified is treated as invalid, as if it had not been filed.

For assessment years up to AY 2026-27, returns are filed and processed under the Income-tax Act, 1961. Returns for Tax Year 2026-27, filed in 2027, fall under the Income-tax Act, 2025. The checks below are the same for both.

What an ITR-V proves and what it doesn't

An ITR-V showsIt does not show
A return was filed for this PAN and yearThat the return was e-verified, unless it says so
The income the taxpayer declaredThat the department accepted that income
The tax the taxpayer says was paidThat the TDS or challans were actually credited
The filing dateWhether a revised return later changed the figures

The income on an ITR-V is self-declared. The department's own view comes later, in the 143(1) intimation issued after CPC processes the return.

Five checks, from quickest to strongest

1. Read the document for internal consistency

  • Year. AY 2026-27 is income earned from April 2025 to March 2026. An applicant claiming "this year's income" with an AY 2024-25 ITR-V is showing income from two years ago.
  • Filing date. A return for AY 2026-27 filed in the week before a loan application, especially after the due date, deserves a question.
  • Taxes paid against income. A salaried person with a high income and no tax paid is unusual, since employers deduct TDS every month.
  • Verification. An unsigned ITR-V form waiting to be posted to CPC, or a copy downloaded before e-verification, is weaker evidence. Check 3 below shows whether the return was verified.

A worked example. A salaried applicant says they earn ₹18 lakh a year. Their AY 2026-27 ITR-V under the new regime shows:

Line on the ITR-VFigure
Total income₹17,25,000
Tax payable (with 4% cess)₹1,50,800
Taxes paid₹1,50,800
Refund or balance dueNil

This hangs together. ₹18,00,000 of salary less the ₹75,000 standard deduction is ₹17,25,000, and the new-regime tax on that, with cess, is ₹1,50,800. If the same ITR-V showed taxes paid of ₹4,000, the employer would have deducted almost no TDS on an ₹18 lakh salary, which doesn't fit the story.

2. Check the PDF's digital signature, if it has one

If the acknowledgement PDF carries a digital signature (a box reading "Signature Not Verified" or "Digitally signed by", or an entry in your PDF reader's signature panel), open the original file in the PDF signature verifier. It is checked in your browser and isn't uploaded. "Signature is valid" means the file hasn't changed since it was signed and the signer's certificate leads to an India CCA root. "Signature is not valid" means the file was changed after signing, or the signature doesn't match it.

Two limits apply. A printout, a photo or a scan carries no digital signature at all, so ask for the original PDF. And a valid signature proves only that the PDF is unaltered; the figures in it are still what the taxpayer declared. How digital signatures work in India explains what a green tick does and doesn't prove.

3. Watch the applicant open it on the portal

The most direct check costs nothing. Ask the applicant to log in to incometax.gov.in on their own device in front of you and open e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns. You can see the acknowledgement number, the filing date, whether the return was e-verified, whether it was processed, and whether a revised return was filed later. They can download the acknowledgement again on the spot. Every ITR status on the portal explains what each status means.

Never ask for the portal password, and don't type it yourself. What's safe to share with a background check covers why.

4. Ask for the 143(1) intimation

Once CPC processes a return it issues an intimation under section 143(1), which sets the taxpayer's figures next to the department's. If the intimation shows the same total income and no demand, the department has accepted the return as filed, at least at that stage. If it shows a demand or a reduced refund, read the line where the difference arises. How to read your 143(1) intimation goes through it line by line. A return still showing "Successfully e-Verified" hasn't been processed yet, so there will be no intimation for it.

5. Compare with Form 26AS or AIS

The ITR-V is the taxpayer's statement. Form 26AS and AIS (the Annual Information Statement) are what employers, banks and others reported against the PAN. For a salaried applicant, the employer's salary and TDS in AIS should roughly match the ITR-V. In the example, AIS would show about ₹18 lakh of salary and ₹1,50,800 of TDS from one TAN. The applicant can show you AIS on the portal or download it themselves.

An employer checking a candidate's past salary has a cleaner option than collecting PDFs. With Greenflag by myutils.me, the employer sends a request, and the candidate signs in, syncs their own tax records and chooses to share the salary, income and ITR figures the request asks for. The figures come from the candidate's own AIS, TIS and filed ITR, shared with their consent. See employer income verification, and the employer guide for what you can request and what the figures mean.

Frequently asked questions

Is an ITR-V valid proof of income?

It is proof that a return was filed with the income stated. Many banks accept it, usually with Form 16 or bank statements, but it shows declared income, not income the department has assessed.

Can a bank verify an ITR-V without the applicant?

Only partly. It can check internal consistency and, if the PDF is digitally signed, the signature. Confirming the return's status, the intimation and AIS needs the applicant to log in or share them.

The ITR-V says "not verified". Is the return valid?

A return has to be verified within 30 days of filing. If it never is, the return is treated as invalid. Ask the applicant to show the status on the portal.

What if the applicant filed a revised return?

The revised return replaces the original. Ask for the latest acknowledgement and check under View Filed Returns that no later return exists for the same year.

Can someone edit an ITR-V PDF?

Anyone can edit a PDF. An edit breaks a digital signature if the file had one, and the edited figures won't match the portal, the intimation or AIS.
