EPFO 3.0 UPI and ATM Withdrawals: What's Live, What's Announced

An ATM machine and a phone with a jar of coins between them, with the words “EPFO 3.0: UPI and ATM”

As of 22 October 2026, you can't withdraw PF through UPI or at an ATM. EPFO has not announced a go-live date for either, and none of the EPFO or PIB releases listed at the end of this post says the facility is open to members. What does work today is the online claim on the EPFO Member Portal, and for many claims that's already fast: advance claims up to ₹5 lakh that pass EPFO's checks are settled automatically, usually within three days.

Here is what has actually been said, by whom and when, and what you can do in the meantime.

What EPFO and the ministry have said, in order

29 March 2025. EPFO's Executive Committee reviewed "seamless PF claim settlement via UPI", described as immediate credit to the member's bank account through the UPI platform. C-DAC, EPFO's technology partner, was building the API and integration with SBI and NPCI, to roll out alongside EPFO's IT upgrade, CITES 2.01. The same meeting welcomed the proposal to raise the auto-claim limit to ₹5 lakh.

24 June 2025. EPFO raised the auto-settlement limit for advance claims from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh, covering illness, education, marriage and housing. Claims that clear the system's checks are processed without human involvement, within three days of submission.

15 October 2025. After the Central Board of Trustees' decision, the ministry explained the new withdrawal rules: 13 types of partial withdrawal merged into one framework, a uniform 12 months of service for withdrawals, up to 100% of the eligible balance withdrawable, and 25% of contributions kept as a minimum balance. The EPF Scheme, 2026, in force since 29 June 2026, puts these rules into paragraph 46. For more on these rules, see how much PF you can withdraw now.

12 February 2026. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, the government described EPFO 3.0 as a digital transformation project that brings "industry standard Core Banking System enabled services", with claims that clear risk checks processed automatically and settlement time cut from up to 20 days to under three days. The reply doesn't mention UPI or ATM withdrawals.

19 May 2026. Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told reporters, as reported by PTI, that testing of the facility was complete and that the withdrawn amount would go directly to the member's bank account. He didn't give a launch date.

8 October 2026. Outlook Money reported that EPFO had started testing UPI-based withdrawals with banks, that the facility had not been rolled out, and that a launch was expected by the end of 2026. The report didn't cite an EPFO statement for that timeline.

So the official record establishes intent and development work, and a ministerial statement that testing was done. It doesn't establish a launch.

What "UPI withdrawal" would and wouldn't change

On the official descriptions so far, UPI would change how money reaches you: immediate credit to the bank account, in place of a payout that follows settlement. It wouldn't change how much you can take out. The limits come from the EPF Scheme's withdrawal rules, which already apply to online claims:

ExampleAmount
Your PF balance (both shares plus interest)₹4,00,000
Minimum balance to be kept (25%)₹1,00,000
Most you could take as a partial withdrawal₹3,00,000

This is simplified: it assumes at least 12 months of service and that the whole balance counts as eligible, which depends on the withdrawal category and your record. The ₹3,00,000 is within the ₹5 lakh auto-settlement limit, so if the claim clears EPFO's checks it can be settled automatically today. A new channel would not raise that ₹3,00,000. Some press reports have quoted per-transaction caps for UPI withdrawals; none of those figures has come from EPFO, so don't plan around them.

The ATM idea is in a weaker position than UPI. EPFO hasn't published how a PF-linked card would work, who would issue it or what it would cost. If UPI credits money to your bank account, you can use that bank's debit card at an ATM, but that's an ordinary bank withdrawal, not a PF one.

What to do now

  1. Fix your KYC. Every faster route depends on it. In the Member Portal, check that your Aadhaar, PAN and bank account are seeded and verified. Bank seeding no longer needs employer approval since April 2025.
  2. Check your service and exit dates. A missing exit date or an untransferred old account causes more delays than the payment channel does. See PF claim rejected: reasons and fixes.
  3. File online. Use Online Services > Claim (Form-31, 19, 10C & 10D) in the Member Portal and track it under Track Claim Status.
  4. Know the tax position. A withdrawal before five years of continuous service can be taxable. See is PF withdrawal before 5 years taxable.
  5. Ignore "activate UPI PF" messages. The Member Portal states that EPFO never asks for Aadhaar, PAN or bank details by phone, and EPFO has warned members against unauthorised agents. A real launch will be announced by EPFO and the labour ministry, on epfindia.gov.in and through PIB.

FAQ

Can I withdraw PF through UPI today?

No. As of 22 October 2026 EPFO has not opened UPI withdrawals to members. The minister said in May 2026 that testing was complete, and later press reports point to a launch by the end of 2026, but EPFO has not given a date.

Can I withdraw PF from an ATM?

Not directly. There's no EPFO-issued PF card or published ATM scheme. Once a claim is settled to your bank account, you can withdraw it from that account like any other money.

Will UPI let me withdraw more than the eligible balance?

Nothing official says so. The withdrawal limits are set by the EPF Scheme, and a new payment channel doesn't change them.

What is the fastest way to get PF money right now?

An online claim with complete KYC. Advance claims up to ₹5 lakh that pass the checks are auto-settled, usually within three days.

How will I know when UPI withdrawal goes live?

Watch EPFO's website and PIB releases from the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Treat any message asking you to "activate" PF on UPI, or to share an OTP, as a scam.
